Alternative methods to consider:

Mortar based pavers (rather than sand based). If you have an existing concrete slab or driveway and are considering using a mortar-based paver, this will impact the cost. This may increase or decrease the cost of installing driveway pavers by $2 to $3 per square foot, depending on the conditions. Contact a contractor about mortar based alternatives and see if it is right for you.
Building a concrete base. If you would like a robust driveway (than can carry heavy loads), consider installing a concrete slab underneath driveway pavers. Essentially, the driveway would have a 4-inch to 5-inch concrete slab poured on top of a compacted base. The pavers are then either sand or mortar set on top of the concrete. This alternative would add $3 to $9 to the cost of the project. The reason the additional cost is less than installing a concrete driveway is because it substitutes (in part) the cost of laying a base for the sand-based driveway pavers.
